In 2018, I visited the P.I. Tchaikovsky museum-estate in the city of Votkinsk. This is the house where the composer was born and lived until he was 8 years old. Here, little Pyotr first heard the sounds of music and touched the keys of the piano gifted by his mother. Childhood impressions always play a huge role in a person’s development and have a profound impact on their creativity. Tchaikovsky’s genius began with a happy childhood, an atmosphere of love and mutual respect in the family. The tender love for his mother, who died when Pyotr was 14, he carried with him throughout his life.
In my personal perception, the quintessence of Tchaikovsky’s music is his Piano Concerto No. 1. I see it in deep dark blue shades with flashes of blazing fire and cold light. This Concerto seems like an entire life: the tragedy of his mother’s death and the first piano she gave to her little son, joyful hopes and bitter disappointments, human weakness and strength of spirit, a long gloomy winter when the soul freezes and almost dies — and a sunny spring with the resurrection of nature and the soul.
