This original work «Bad apartment, Master and Margarita» was created by contemporary Russian artist Vladimir Abaimov.
Vladimir Abaimov's painting «Нехорошая квартира, Мастер и Маргарита» is a complex, multi-layered surrealistic interpretation of the famous novel by Mikhail Bulgakov. The artist uses disorienting architecture to convey the chaos and mysticism of Moscow life.
The canvas is a fantastic collage of architectural fragments where all laws of perspective and gravity are broken. Staircases lead nowhere, and rooms are inverted and adjoin each other at impossible angles. This architectural labyrinth symbolizes the famous Bad Apartment, which, according to the novel, expands and changes shape.
At the center of the composition stands a closed red door — a symbol of entry into the mystical world and the place of the main events. Next to the door descends a spiral staircase connecting different levels of reality.
In various parts of the painting, recognizable motifs from the novel are placed: in the lower right corner, the Master and Margarita can be seen standing against the backdrop of an endless corridor. There is also a surreal image related to one of the novel’s characters (possibly Berlioz), depicted as a severed head reflected in a mirror on a green velvet armchair.
Abaimov creates visual chaos that accurately reflects the atmosphere of the novel: a blend of reality, dream, satire, and mysticism. The painting serves as a kind of guide through the non-Euclidean geometry of Bulgakov’s world.
