The painting uses a design depicted on a cup (Kylix: three figures, silver, gold, 440-430 BC) as a shadow on the cliff from the past. Archaeologists' finds of ceramics and other objects from the past at the settlement site are steps into the future.
This is what a cross-section of the settlement looks like. All these layers, from the 6th century BC to the present day, were formed one after another from construction and household waste, burying the remains of buildings beneath them.
Clay structures deteriorated quickly, and new ones were built in their place. Therefore, over 26 centuries, the cultural layer here has reached 12 meters.
The settlement of Hermonassa is located in the center of modern Taman. The earliest excavated buildings here date back to the middle of the 6th century BC. This land preserves traces of Greek colonization, Roman rule, the Great Migration of Peoples, the history of the Khazar Khaganate, the campaigns of the princes of Kievan Rus, the Genoese colony, Ottoman dominion, the events of Taman’s annexation to Russia, and the Crimean, Civil, and Great Patriotic Wars.
The city has changed its name many times. The ancient Greeks called it Hermonassa, the Khazars - Matluka or Tamatarkha, the Slavs - Tmutarakan, the Polovtsians - Matrika or Matarkha, the Genoese - Matrega, and the Turks - Taman.
