THE HOUSE OF THE STRAYING PIGEON
For many centuries, up until the beginning of the last, 20th century, the sky over the North American continent was painted with flocks of astonishingly colorful birds, whose ruby-sapphire-emerald plumage long captivated numerous “aesthetes,” “naturalists,” “collectors,” and simply lovers of shooting at something alive, until the last one was caught to adorn someone’s dusty, trophy-filled study with its stuffed body…
The bird was called Paloma migratoria – the Straying Pigeon.
About eighty years after that sad event, I named my multicolored dream of my own home by the same name, firstly because a home can travel at its owner’s will, instantly appearing wherever his boundless imagination points and thereby playfully eliminating the sad flaw of any other real estate – its innate immobility.
Secondly, because the straying pigeon does not exist, nor does my home. And there is no point in building it, especially after realizing: a person in this world has no reliable dwelling and cannot have one.
In the universe, our happy mind
Builds an unreliable home,
People, stars, and angels live
By its spherical tension.
We have not yet conceived a child,
But already under its feet
A film arches nowhere
On its circular orbit.
That is to say, strictly speaking, a person has no dwelling at all, except perhaps a fragile hut of their own imagination, constructed from their own feelings and thoughts in the Absolute Void. In this regard, the encouragement of Khalil Gibran looks very uplifting: let your home be not an anchor, but a sail.
Thus, the House of the Straying Pigeon became such a sail-dream for me, with the wind in it being my own breath.
And if this idea resonates with someone else’s heart as well, I will be immensely happy.
