I can't calm this sorrow and longing,

I can't tell who is friend and who is foe,
and why bother building a garden here,
if the goal is utter darkness,
if the reward is a hole in a bagel,
even if it's not madness or prison,
even if the time hasn't come yet.
But still, a fool I am, a fool indeed,
day after day I wait for you – yet can't wait enough,
dreaming in the evening to the Beatles’ tunes,
how I will appear in your life.
How you will bring disorder to my life
like in an April forest,
and fill me with poems by the dozen,
and return spring to me for just an hour,
my starry native sickness,
the bright distance of my dark night,
a life lived with you without you,
a sacred sorrow with you without you.
Because you cannot not exist!
Since all poems, as they are, are about you.
Maybe it’s just impossible to reach you,
maybe it’s just impossible to live long enough to meet you.
