The leaves have been gathered from the branches
and wrapped into a bundle
on the quiet earth.
The rain has gone.
The city dried by the wind,
and however dear
November’s gray silk may be,
we must say goodbye to it,
to dress again
in the colors of the Gods’ clothing –
what can you do, such is
the ritual of the year’s renunciation of the throne:
the first snow…the chime of the clock…

silent, thoughtful, soundless,
like a genius, mad,

objects disappear
in the embrace of Lethe.
Street lamps scatter light,
bent
under the weight of the sky,
whose womb, filled with manna,
has bestowed a generous feast
for the worshippers of winter.
Dry bushes swell,
like stale rolls in sour cream.
The strange old man in a cassock
reaches his fingers into the trees.
His feet are clean,
his brows empty,
his thoughts irresistible…
