Tapping fingers on metal,
all day improvising jazz-rain.
Curling up in a ball of gray wool,
the autumn twilight listened to the tremor of metal.
The stormy evening dimmed silverly.
In the lights of Saint Elmo, the old house
listlessly drifted toward visions –
a blinded wanderer, guided by an angel.
Tungsten suns of a thousand windows
in the darkness resembling the Zodiac,
pierced by some secret current
were sending a secret sign to someone.
Lost texts in Sanskrit,
prophecies of vanished Martians
in the unread manuscript on the window
lit up the whole city like a screen.
The glow of stars, nebulae, planets
that had somehow seeped deep into the asphalt
performed a brilliant somersault
over the heads of x, y, and z
onto the streets of neighboring dimensions,
where in ash two o mix light
and paint with watercolor of illuminations
a transformed portrait of the evening.
The synthesizer of the north-west soloed,
buzzing like a ghost in the cracks.
A monster, villain, and gladiator
appeared in unrecognized things.
The undeciphered signs went out,
leaving the street lamps on duty.
But in the returned sky Zodiac
their secret text smolders until dawn.
In the drawings of the night – dark, pencil-drawn –
slightly making the abysses of shadows translucent,
in the shards of puddles behind the lights’ backs
the hazy dream of yesterday’s melody
fulfilled the prophecy of the dawn.
