Perhaps everyone knows that still life in French — nature morte — means "dead nature"... However, in this sense, I prefer the English translation - still-life — motionless, frozen, yet nevertheless alive!
I found it interesting to work on this painting from a technical perspective – to study the details deeply and subtly, to look closely at the numerous refractions of light and reflections of objects through glass, to convey the texture of the clay jug and the highlights from the window on it, carefully painting each candy, each possessing its own unique color and shape.
Yet there remained some dissatisfaction, a lack of life, dynamics… Then the idea arose to include a bird in the overall composition — a light creature that is constantly moving. The choice fell on a blue jay, which, thanks to its plumage, harmoniously blended with the surrounding environment in color and gave the seemingly modern still life a touch of antiquity, reminding us of memories of paintings by old Dutch masters…
