Novo-Aksakovo, or Znamenskoye, one of the
estates of the Aksakov nobles, was founded in the
mid-18th century by transferring serfs from the
Simbirsk estate on the lands of the Buguruslan
district of the Orenburg-Samara Volga region.
The Russian classic Sergei Timofeevich Aksakov,
the grandson of the founder of the estate, spent
his childhood, adolescence and the first few
years after his marriage in Znamensky. His eldest
children were born in this ancient noble nest; the
ashes of his grandparents rest in the surrounding
villages. The rural life of a landowner taught Sergei
Timofeevich to love and appreciate nature; under
the name New Bagrovo, he fascinatingly described
Znamenskoye in the book «Family Chronicle».
The passion for hunting and fishing became the
outline for his books «Notes on the Angling of
Fish» (1847) and «Notes of a Gun Hunter of the
Orenburg Province» (1852). They brought Aksakov
fame as a recognized master, known throughout
reading Russia. His narrative was recognized
as classic, the descriptions of nature – poetic
images of animals, birds and fish – masterful.
Ivan Turgenev’s review appreciated his talent as
a superfine master of description. Nikolai Gogol
praised him: «There is more life in your birds
than in my people»... Over time, the wide open
space between the Volga and the Urals, that was
artistically experienced in the images of Aksakov,
acquired the name «the Aksakov’s forest-steppe».
