The painting “A Look from the Past” is part of a series of works entitled “In the Footsteps of Lost Civilizations,” which explores the links between the past and the present. The visual language is based on the aesthetics of fragments. Etruscan ornaments appear not as complete images, but as precious fragments emerging through the thickness of time. This fragmentary nature becomes the main narrative tool, transforming the painting into an archaeological artifact and inviting the viewer to become a participant in a dialogue with lost cultures.
The painting is based on the artist's reflections that it is time to rethink life and start living, consciously enjoying every second that is given.
The viewer can almost physically feel how the flowing fabric, like the waters of the River of Oblivion, “washes away the dust of centuries,” revealing an ancient helmet and a woman's profile on an old fresco. The key contrast with the past is the plums on an ancient dish. The ripe fruit embodies the fragile beauty of the present, which in a second will become a shadow. Their proximity to the ancient bronze helmet visualizes the unity of time: the past and the present side by side.
Textured paste, oil and acrylic paints, wax, and bitumen varnish emphasize the contrast of textures: the patina of metal, the juiciness of fruit, the roughness of the fresco.
In the background is a replica of a fragment of an Etruscan fresco depicting Velia Velci, the Etruscan “Mona Lisa.”
A philosophical text is organically woven into the pictorial canvas. The translucent inscription, visible through the paint, reads: “Yesterday is a history, tomorrow is a mystery, the present is a gift.”
INVESTMENT ATTRACTIVENESS
The investment appeal of the painting “A Look from the Past” is shaped by its conceptual affiliation with the series, active exhibition activity, confirmed market demand, positive dynamics in the value of reproductions, and strengthening of status through publication in a specialized print publication.
The work is part of the series “In the Footsteps of Lost Civilizations,” which is characterized by the trinity of image, title, and text on canvas.
The exhibition geography of the work in 2025 includes the international multimedia project “Dialogue across Continents,” aimed at leading galleries and participants in the Art Basel and Frieze fairs, the all-Russian exhibition-competition “Talent of Russia” in Moscow, and a solo exhibition in Padua (Italy).
Market demand is confirmed by the sale of two reproductions from a limited edition giclée (10 copies) on the ArtSreda platform between June and October 2025. The sale price of reproductions during this period increased by 28%, which indicates growing interest in the artist's work and directly affects the investment value of the original.
Recognition of the work in professional circles and an increase in its collectible value were ensured by publications: in the book Art and Life, Volume 24 (2025), in an article dedicated to the artist's creative path, printed in the book Dialogues on Art (2025), as well as in the article: “Elena Kosova: From ROSATOM to Painting,” published on the Dzen digital content platform (2025).
