This original work «Olga Baklanova» was created by contemporary Russian artist Pavel Pashkin and is available for purchase online.
In the mid-1920s, Olga Vladimirovna was undoubtedly a star. A favorite of Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, she became the prima of the Musical Studio he established at the Moscow Art Theatre, where she drew full houses. In 1925, she even earned the title of Honored Artist of the State Academic Theatres.
But when Baklanova moved to the USA, she was forgotten. Rare mentions in memoirs are limited to describing her as a «beauty», as, for example, Sofia Hyacinthova did. Contemporary people can be understood: under Soviet rule, contacts with emigrants were risky. Even today, her name seems erased from theatrical history. And if it does appear, it is primarily because of that very undeniable and triumphant beauty. It is no coincidence that the only person who studied her fate was not a theater scholar or a cinema professional, but fashion historian Alexander Vasiliev. He, by the way, chose an excellent epigraph for his essay: «But the princess suddenly disappeared, as if she had never existed».
Theater was Baklanova’s first love, and she remained loyal to it. But she performed at the Musical Studio for only five years. Olga Vladimirovna also acted in films, but those movies have not survived. Meanwhile, in the States, her film career turned out to be much more impressive. Hollywood polished the actress’s beauty, presenting her as an exotic blonde seductress and calling her the Russian tigress. And although Baklanova’s Hollywood story lasted the same five years, her films have been preserved, and some have even become part of American cinema history.
