This original work, «Subtle distance», was created by the contemporary Russian artist Svetlana Makarova and is available for purchase online.
"Subtle distance"
In the foreground, there is a large cage with bars through which one can easily enter or exit. Inside the cage, a white dog is sleeping; next to the dog is a plate, and on the plate lies a heart. On top of the cage sits a bird.
Not far from the cage stands a small man wearing glasses and holding an umbrella shaped like a cane. A shadow extends from the small man, creeping along the red wall of an old building. This building appears torn into two parts — one part is to the right of the center of the painting, and the other part is at the left edge of the painting.
On the building itself, on the right side, an owl sits watching the creeping shadow. In the background, there is a deserted landscape with mountains in the distance. Behind the cage, two stones cast shadows. Everything in this deserted valley seems frozen. And the clouds above hang gloomily in anticipation of dawn.
The idea of the painting is this — everything has a subtle distance — between sleep and reality. The cage symbolizes limitations that, in fact, do not exist. The cage is also the shell of the sleeper. The bird on top of the cage is the soul of the sleeper; it is always free, and the cage for it is merely an image without restrictions.
The sleeping dog in the birdcage represents dormant instincts that can devour the heart with their destructive emotions. The small man is the sleeping mind; he would like to wake the dog. His shadow is not a shadow at all but a separate entity. The building torn into two parts is an absurd image expressing that everything is just a frame on film that does not necessarily have to proceed linearly.
Perhaps this interpretation of the painting is absurd and nonlinear. It is simply a painting with red walls and a large crooked birdcage.
You can hang this painting on the wall in your apartment, house, office, restaurant, or hotel, and it will become a wonderful decoration for your interior.
