The painting “Independence” was created on the island of Cyprus — directly on the seashore, as part of an authorial performance by the artist Antonio Lebedef. The work was preceded by a lengthy and profound analysis of the island’s history: its division, cultural layers, political conflicts, and attempts to preserve the integrity of identity. The very process of painting became an act of experiencing space and time — a dialogue between the artist and the earth, the wind, and the horizon line.
This is a rare artistic experience in which the history of an entire island is captured on a single canvas. The composition intertwines symbols from different eras, the tension between division and the aspiration for unity, memory and hope. The word “Independence,” hidden within the work and duplicated in Turkish (bağımsızlık), becomes the key to interpreting the painting — not as a political slogan, but as an inner state.
The borders in this work are intentionally devoid of rigidity: they dissolve, rise into the sky, and sway like ribbons. The artist emphasizes the main idea of the painting — any borders are illusory, they exist only in human consciousness, while nature, the sea, and the sky remain free from divisions.
After its creation, the painting was presented at two universities, where it became a subject of discussion not only as an artwork but also as a visual study of history, identity, and freedom.
“Independence” is a reflection on the right to be whole, on freedom as an inner choice, and on the fact that true independence begins beyond any drawn lines.
