The picture represents a visually effective metaphorical exploration of the interaction between visual associations and the musical sound of a popular song from the recent past. The song The House of the Rising Sun (the Rising Sun House) became popular thanks to its performance in 1965 by the group The Animals. The song’s action takes place in New Orleans.
Performed by the British group The Animals, this song topped the charts in both the USA and Great Britain in 1964; this version was included (under № 123) in the List of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine (2004).
There are many versions of the song in which the plot varies significantly. In all versions, the protagonist narrates how their life was ruined in the "Rising Sun" house and warns against such a fate; however, in different versions, the ruined person is either a woman (including the original folk version) or a man (including The Animals’ version). The "Rising Sun House" is understood by some as a brothel, by others as a tavern or gambling house.
While many places in New Orleans claim the title of "the Rising Sun," archaeological research at 535 Conti Street, a site documented as the location of the "Rising Sun Hotel" in the 1820s, has added some information to the debate about the song’s origin in New Orleans.
Besides The Animals, many artists have recorded versions of "The House of the Rising Sun." This iconic piece for American blues, фолка, and country performers, including significant names such as Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, Josh White, and Libby Hillman, embodied versions in the first half of the 20th century.
There are also other theories about the song’s origin. The first known recording of the song was performed by the duet Tom Clarence Ashley and Gwen Foster in 1934.
Probably using vivid structures, bold color schemes, and symbolic images, the artist has created the picture in the style of metaphysical realism, inviting reflection on the nature of melodic lines and sounds in a timeless popular song.
At the center of the composition is a stain reminiscent of a building against an orange disk, but not a direct illustration of the house, suggesting a physical world where the sun lives. The disk is also a formal image of the sun. Beyond this, иллюстративность ends. There are three more trees which are important for the composition’s structure, though not significant for its meaning.
The contrast between the flat background and the foreground rich with structures creates an intentional division between the ordinary and the fantastic. It is a poetic and visually vivid work that sings of the beauty and complexity of the subconscious. It demands more than a superficial glance and calls for attention to nuances: the play of light, the dynamics of lines, the latent contrasts, and everyone perceives this information through their own associations.
